President Donald Trump announced that Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. This announcement follows a series of intense diplomatic efforts, including a “long and productive” meeting between U.S. officials and Israeli representatives.
The ceasefire proposal is being delivered to Hamas by mediators from Qatar and Egypt, who have played a critical role in facilitating dialogue amid one of the longest and deadliest conflicts in recent Middle Eastern history.
Trump shared the news on his social media platform Truth Social, stating:
“Israel has accepted the conditions necessary to agree to the 60-day ceasefire, during which we will work with all parties to end the war.” He praised the “hard work” of Qatar and Egypt in helping “bring peace” to the region. Trump expressed hope that Hamas would accept the agreement, warning that “the situation will not improve; it will only get worse” if the ceasefire is rejected.
The announcement comes ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled visit to Washington next week, where he will meet with Trump and senior U.S. officials to discuss the conflict and hostage negotiations. Trump has vowed to be “very firm” with Netanyahu on ending the Gaza war and emphasized the importance of securing the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
Reports indicate that Hamas has shown willingness to release a portion of hostages in exchange for the ceasefire, though key sticking points remain, particularly Hamas’s demand for guarantees that Israel will not resume military operations after the truce.
The actions of the current U.S. administration on the international stage reveal a troubling continuity of imperialist policies disguised as diplomacy. The insistence on presenting ceasefire agreements as unilateral achievements, without addressing the structural causes of the conflict or guaranteeing full rights to the affected peoples, reflects a strategy more focused on preserving geopolitical interests than seeking a just and lasting peace.
This stance is also accompanied by rhetoric that perpetuates the criminalization and isolation of nations resisting global hegemony, deepening tensions and destabilizing entire regions under the pretext of security and stability.

In this context, external mediations, while necessary, cannot replace the demand for respect for sovereignty, self-determination, and social justice as fundamental pillars for any genuine solution.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains catastrophic. Palestinian health authorities report tens of thousands of civilian deaths since October 2023, with infrastructure devastated by continuous Israeli bombardments. The blockade severely restricts access to food, medicine, and essential services, deepening the suffering of over two million people.
Left-wing organizations stress that ceasefires without concrete measures to end the occupation and ensure reparations risk perpetuating cycles of violence and injustice.
While Israel’s acceptance of a 60-day ceasefire, as announced by Trump, could provide a crucial pause in hostilities, caution must be taken, as lasting peace requires dismantling the systems of imperialism and occupation that fuel the conflict. The mediation efforts of Qatar and Egypt are important, but sustained international pressure and solidarity are essential to achieving justice for the Palestinian people.
